Chicxulub is close enough to Mérida for an easy half-day or beach day, but the name causes a lot of confusion. There are two different places travelers usually mean: Chicxulub Pueblo, the inland town and municipal seat, and Chicxulub Puerto, the beach town on the Gulf coast, east of Progreso.

They are not interchangeable. Chicxulub Pueblo is the cabecera of its own municipality, while Chicxulub Puerto is part of the municipality of Progreso. For travelers, the short version is simple: go to Chicxulub Pueblo for the inland town and crater-name connection; go to Chicxulub Puerto for the beach.

The transport options are different enough that it is worth planning them separately.

Quick answer

Chicxulub PuebloDirect Noreste bus from Terminal NoresteTaxi, rideshare, or private driverAbout 35–55 minutesA short local-town visit, errands, crater-history interest
Chicxulub PuertoDirect Noreste bus when times work, or Autoprogreso to Progreso plus local taxi/colectivoRental car, rideshare, or private driverAbout 45–75 minutesBeach day, seafood lunch, combining with Progreso

Current route listings show direct Noreste buses from Mérida Terminal Noreste to Chicxulub Pueblo, with a typical journey of about 45–55 minutes. Listings also show direct Noreste buses from Mérida to Chicxulub Puerto, with a typical journey of about 1 hour 10 minutes. The Puerto service is less frequent than the Pueblo service, so confirm the same-day schedule before building your beach day around it.

First, choose the right Chicxulub

Before booking transport, confirm which destination you need. They are only about 15–20 km apart by road, but buses, taxis, and day plans are not the same.

Chicxulub Pueblo

Chicxulub Pueblo is inland, northeast of Mérida. It is a small Yucatecan town, not a beach. It suits travelers who are curious about the name Chicxulub, local town life, or a stop as part of a wider north-of-Mérida route.

Do not expect a polished tourist circuit. This is a practical local destination: a central park, streets, local shops, small-town rhythm, and the broader identity of the Chicxulub impact crater.

Plan 1–2 hours unless you have a specific appointment, local contact, or a custom route.

Chicxulub Puerto

Chicxulub Puerto is the coastal one. It sits along the Gulf coast east of Progreso and works better for a beach day, lunch by the sea, or a slower local alternative to central Progreso. It is still close to Progreso, so many travelers combine both in the same outing.

The main drawback is transport after arrival. Getting to Progreso from Mérida is easy. Getting from Progreso to Chicxulub Puerto is also easy by car or taxi, but public transport can be less obvious for first-time visitors. Build in extra time, carry cash, and do not leave the return plan until late evening.

Best overall option: drive yourself

A rental car is the easiest way to visit either Chicxulub, especially if you want to stop for food, combine places, or return after sunset.

For Chicxulub Pueblo, drive north or northeast out of Mérida through the Conkal side. From central Mérida, allow around 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic and where you start.

For Chicxulub Puerto, the simplest route for most visitors is the Mérida–Progreso highway, then east along the coast from Progreso. From central Mérida, allow around 45–60 minutes in normal conditions. Clean driving estimates may be shorter, but from Centro, hotel pickup, parking, and weekend traffic can add time.

A car is best if you are traveling with children, beach bags, older relatives, or anyone who does not want to negotiate transfers in the heat. It is also the cleanest choice if you want to combine Progreso + Chicxulub Puerto, or Chicxulub Pueblo + Uaymitún / the coast road.

Bring small cash for parking, snacks, bathrooms, and beach services. Many places take cards, but smaller coastal and pueblo businesses still work best with cash.

Chicxulub Pueblo by public bus

For Chicxulub Pueblo, the public bus is practical.

Use Autobuses del Noreste from Terminal Noreste in central Mérida. The terminal is commonly listed around Calle 67 between Calle 50 and Calle 52 in Centro.

Current route listings show direct buses from Mérida Terminal Noreste to Chicxulub Pueblo, with typical rides around 45–55 minutes. Some listings show service starting early in the morning and continuing into the evening.

This is the best budget option if your destination is the pueblo itself. It is not the best option if you are trying to reach the beach, because Chicxulub Puerto is farther north on the coast.

Practical notes:

  • Arrive early enough to ask at the terminal window.

  • Say “Chicxulub Pueblo”, not just “Chicxulub.”

  • Carry small bills.

  • Confirm the last return before you leave Mérida.

  • Expect a local bus experience, not a tourist shuttle.

Chicxulub Puerto by direct bus

There is also direct bus service from Mérida to Chicxulub Puerto, but it is much less frequent than the Progreso bus.

Current route listings show Autobuses Noreste Yucatán operating direct Mérida–Chicxulub Puerto service, with an average ride time of about 1 hour 10 minutes and a low local fare compared with taxi or rideshare.

The schedule checked for this guide showed limited direct departures, including early morning and evening options on some days. Treat these as schedule-check data, not a guarantee. Confirm at the terminal or with the operator before relying on the direct bus for a same-day beach plan.

This option is best for budget travelers who are comfortable with fixed schedules. It is less convenient for families, beach gear, or anyone who wants to leave whenever they are ready.

Chicxulub Puerto by Autoprogreso plus local taxi or colectivo

This is often the most flexible public-transport method for Chicxulub Puerto.

First, take Autoprogreso from Mérida Centro to Progreso. The Autoprogreso route is frequent and well used by locals and visitors. Current route data lists the Mérida Centro–Progreso direct route operating daily from early morning into the evening, with a typical route duration of about 1 hour.

From Progreso, continue east to Chicxulub Puerto by local taxi or colectivo. This final leg is short by road, but it is the part travelers should not improvise too late in the day. Ask at the Progreso terminal or nearby taxi stands for the current colectivo point or taxi fare to Chicxulub Puerto.

This route is best if you want to spend part of the day in Progreso and part in Chicxulub Puerto. It is also useful if the direct Chicxulub Puerto bus times do not match your plan.

Taxi from Mérida

A taxi is simple and usually faster than public transport, especially for Chicxulub Pueblo. For Chicxulub Puerto, it is comfortable but can cost much more than the bus.

Current route estimates place Mérida to Chicxulub Puerto by taxi at around 35–45 minutes in clean driving conditions. Real fares vary by pickup point, time, luggage, waiting time, and whether the driver is returning empty.

For the Puerto, agree on the price before getting in. For a day trip, ask whether the driver can return for you at a fixed time, or arrange a separate pickup.

A taxi works well for:

  • Families with beach bags

  • Travelers staying outside Centro

  • Short-notice trips

  • Anyone who wants to avoid transfers

  • Pueblo visits where bus times are inconvenient

It is not the cheapest option.

Uber and app-based rides

Uber and other app-based rides may be available for Mérida-to-Chicxulub trips, but availability can vary by time, pickup point, and return demand.

For the outbound trip from Mérida, rideshare can be convenient. For the return from Chicxulub Puerto, do not assume a car will appear quickly, especially at night, in bad weather, or outside busy periods. Check availability before you sit down for your last drink or meal.

For Chicxulub Pueblo, rideshare is usually easier than for the beach because it is closer to Mérida, but the same rule applies: check the return before committing.

Private driver or transfer

A private driver is the easiest option if you want a calm day without worrying about schedules. It makes sense for families, small groups, wedding guests, older travelers, and anyone combining stops.

Private transport can be arranged from Mérida to either Chicxulub Pueblo or Chicxulub Puerto. This is not necessary for a simple budget visit, but it is useful if you want to combine:

  • Mérida pickup

  • Chicxulub Pueblo

  • Chicxulub Puerto

  • Progreso

  • Lunch stop

  • Grocery stop

  • Return at a fixed time

For a smoother trip, ask the driver in advance whether the price includes waiting time, extra stops, tolls if applicable, parking, and late return.

Tour or custom itinerary

There is no need for a standard tour just to reach Chicxulub Pueblo or Chicxulub Puerto. Both are close enough to do independently.

A custom route makes more sense if you want someone to shape a half-day or full-day plan around the crater story, the coast, Progreso, food stops, and timing. This is also helpful if you are traveling with a group and do not want to manage multiple taxis.

For a simple trip, use the free Yucatán Guide WhatsApp assistant for quick route questions. For a more detailed plan, Human Trip Support can check whether your timing makes sense, and the Trip Plan & Booking Portal can help organize private drivers, transfers, and custom day trips without turning the day into a packaged tour.

What about Va-y-Ven or local city buses?

Local routing apps may show urban or metropolitan bus options near the north side of Mérida or toward Chicxulub-area locations.

For most visitors, this is not the cleanest option. It may involve transfers, walking, and uncertainty about where to get off. Use it only if you are comfortable with local public transport, speak enough Spanish to ask drivers, and are not carrying beach gear.

For first-time travelers, the simpler choices are:

  • Chicxulub Pueblo: direct Noreste bus

  • Chicxulub Puerto: direct Noreste bus if the time works, or Autoprogreso to Progreso plus local taxi/colectivo

Can you bike or scooter from Mérida?

Technically, strong cyclists can ride north of Mérida, but this is not a normal visitor recommendation. The heat, sun exposure, traffic, and fast roads make it a poor choice for most travelers.

A scooter or motorbike is also possible if you are experienced and properly licensed, but it is not ideal for the Mérida–Progreso highway or for returning after dark. If you are visiting the beach, a car or driver is safer and more comfortable.

Can you take the Tren Maya?

No. The Tren Maya is not useful for this route. Chicxulub Pueblo and Chicxulub Puerto are local destinations north of Mérida. Use road transport.

Which option should you choose?

Choose the direct Noreste bus to Chicxulub Pueblo if you are traveling light, on a budget, and want the pueblo itself.

Choose the direct Noreste bus to Chicxulub Puerto if the limited schedule fits your day and you are comfortable confirming return times.

Choose Autoprogreso to Progreso plus local taxi/colectivo if you want the cheapest flexible beach route and do not mind a transfer.

Choose Uber, taxi, or private driver if you have beach gear, kids, older relatives, limited time, or want a predictable return.

Choose rental car if you want to combine multiple stops or explore the coast at your own pace.

Suggested half-day plans

Chicxulub Pueblo half-day

Leave Mérida after breakfast and take the Noreste bus or a taxi to Chicxulub Pueblo. Walk the center, get a cold drink, and treat it as a quiet local-town visit rather than a major attraction. Return to Mérida before the hottest part of the afternoon.

This works best for travelers who like small towns and do not need a beach.

Chicxulub Puerto beach day without a car

Take Autoprogreso from Mérida to Progreso in the morning. From Progreso, take a local taxi or colectivo east to Chicxulub Puerto. Have lunch, swim if conditions are good, and return to Progreso with enough daylight and transport margin.

This works best for budget travelers, couples, and flexible travelers. It is less ideal with small children unless you are comfortable managing transfers.

Chicxulub Puerto beach day with a car

Drive from Mérida to Progreso, continue east to Chicxulub Puerto, and choose your beach or lunch stop. Return before dark if you do not like night driving, especially after a full sun day.

This is the easiest version for families.

Pueblo and Puerto in one day

Start with Chicxulub Pueblo in the morning, then continue north to the coast if you have a car or private driver. Without a car, this route becomes awkward and slower. It is possible, but not the best use of a short day.

Practical tips

Bring cash in small bills. Public buses, colectivos, taxis, beach bathrooms, and small shops are easier with cash.

Use the full name when asking directions. Say “Chicxulub Pueblo” or “Chicxulub Puerto.” Do not rely on “Chicxulub” alone.

Check the return first. This matters most for Chicxulub Puerto. Direct buses are limited, local taxis may vary, and app-based rides are not guaranteed at the exact moment you want them.

Go early in hot months. The coast is easier in the morning, and the pueblo is more pleasant before midday heat.

Expect bus information to change. Current listings are useful, but local Yucatán routes can shift. Confirm at the terminal, with the driver, or through the operator’s current channel before building a tight itinerary.

Avoid the last-minute beach return. If you are not driving, have your route back to Mérida clear before sunset.

Final recommendation

For most travelers, Chicxulub Puerto is the more useful day trip because it gives you the coast, food, and an easy combination with Progreso. Go by rental car, private driver, or Autoprogreso plus a local taxi if you want flexibility.

Chicxulub Pueblo is worth considering if you are specifically interested in the name, the crater connection, or a quieter inland stop. It is not a beach destination, and it is not the best choice if you are short on time and simply want the sea.

Both are close to Mérida. The key is not distance. The key is naming the right place, choosing the right route, and knowing how you will get back.
